Found throughout Europe (largest beetle in Europe) and Southeast Asia. Larvae are usually found in decaying wood. This beetle is on the verge of being placed on the endangered species list due to loss of habitat. They are known for their large and extended mandibles. They belong to a group of beetles due to as xylophagous (beetles that depend on decaying wood).
