Mollosidae or free tailed bats are a family of bats within the order Chiroptera. It is characterized by its long thick bare tail, and uniquely shaped ears. They have short, strong, well developed legs. Free tailed bats have small eyes and narrow wings. Hey have a flattish rectangular shaped body. Free tailed bats have short black or brown fur and a doglike head. They can weigh from 8 to 220g depending on the species. They are very fast fliers and have been clocked at 60 miles per hour. They eat flying insects that they catch on their wings. Free tailed bats are found in caves, old buildings, and hollow trees. Some species live in large colonies that can exceed 5 million individuals.
