Minke whales are magnificent mammals of the sea for being unique.  A Minke whales’ common name is Balaenoptera acutostrata. They are found all over the world, except polar areas. There are some pretty cool facts about B. acutostrata.

There has been a lot of research. Here is some of those cool facts.  B. acutostrata are the second smallest baleen whales. The B. acutostrata’s skin is either a very dark grey or black. On top of the fins, pale trapezoid shapes are present. Their blubber is seven inches thick, and finally, on its back; a small dorsal fin.

Balaenoptera acutostrata have an average to high diet. A seasonal feeder, and a carnivore, the sea has much to supply. B. acutostrata have an appetite similar to a blue whale.  They eat a variety of animals; plankton, krill, small fish, sardines, anchovies, and herring.

They’re estimated to have about eight-hundred thousand B. acutostrata and counting, in the world. Whale watching cruises are setting sail to these magnificent creatures. These whales are social enough to at least interact. Since these whales gather air for two to five minutes, the time limit is worth it. They are mostly found in pacific areas.

Minke Whales are magnificent mammals of the sea for being unique. From the diets they have, to the social nature they own. Minke Whales were “blessed” to be known!
