Hesperoptenus doriae, known as the False Serotine Bat is like no other bat. If you happen to come across one the first thing you will notice is its description. The false serotine bat is very dark brown or black, its fur is curly and it has a blunt nose. The false serotine bat has a sheep-like head and face. The bats ears are short and round. And its wings are dark and long with pointed tips to improve speed.

False Serotine bats are found in primary forests and caves between 500 and 1,500 metres above sea level, this bats habitat is being lost mostly because of human activities, such as destroying the bats habitats to build homes, agriculture and, importantly oil palm. The oil palms plantations cover vast arias of their habitats. Oil plantations have doubled in the last 20 years taking most of the bats habitat.

Female false serotine bats give birth to 1 pup each year, the pup feeds on its moms milk until it can fly and forage alone. False serotine bats eat insects that fly above the rivers and in open spaces in the rain forest,
