The plain chachalaca occurs in small groups. You can hunt for these birds but, at Texas Parks wildlife offers hunting but the daily bag limit is 5 birds. Some say its a large chicken-like bird from Mexico and Central America the plain chachalaca bird reaches the United States only in southern Texas. They are known for their loud raucous calls that are really noisy that's where they get there name from. Also they have brownish feathers.
The common name is an onomatopoeia for the four-noted cackle of the plain chachalaca. They are mainly found in wooded habitats in far southern United States, Texas, Mexico, and also Central and South America. They are about 20 to 24 inches long.They have a very long green-tinged tail. The plain chachalaca eats leaves, grain, berries and buds and sometimes insects.
The chachalaca is a very noisy bird. At dawn and sunset groups of chachalcas will call loudly from the treetops. The plain chachalaca does not migrate.
