The Crocothemis nigrifron also know as a Blue Scarlet is a dragonfly. The male Blue Scarlet dragonfly can grow up to 45 mm. The Blue Scarlet dragonfly is a bright powder blue on the abdomen with a black line on the top of the abdomen, and a black thorax too. This is rare for a male dragonfly because most of the male dragonflies of the crocthemis species are bright red. This type of dragonfly can be found in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.
The Blue Scarlet dragonfly can be found near still or sluggish waters and is common over much of its range. Although there is one other dragonfly that looks like the Blue Scarlet dragonfly the only difference is that the Blue Scarlet has the wider abdomen and darker thorax. The Blue Scarlet female is a brownish yellow color. The female has the black line at the middle of the boarder abdomen. On hot days the Blue Scarlet dragonfly will point its abdomen towards the sun to reduce the heat absorbed.
