The Grus Vipio or commonly known as a White-Naped Crane. This bird can be found in Kyushu, Japan. This bird is apart of the crane family. This bird is a very large bird. This bird is vulnerable toward extinction. Through their migrating season some of the birds migrated to the Yangtze River.
The White-Naped Crane averages about 4 ft. tall. While weighing in at 12 lbs. Its legs are pinkish while its neck is white and grey. Its distinctive feature is its red eye patch. They have bristly hair around the eye.
This bird can be found in northeastern Mongolia, northeastern China, and adjacent areas of southeastern Russia during their breeding season. While other groups can be found in Kyushu,Japan, also Kazakhstan and taiwan. It is mostly found in wetlands of steppe and forest steppes.The population is about 5,500 or 6,500 individuals. This species is gradually declining. It is declining due to wetlands being destroyed.
The White-Naped Crane mainly eats insects, seeds and roots. When these are not in sight it will resort to eating plants and other small aquatic animals. It also eats grains,insects, and snails.
The White-Naped Crane has a wingspan of about 200-210 cm. long. An interesting fact about the bird is that a family of them will stay together through the migrating season. Also the only way to distinguish a male from female is by their call.
