Black Sea Nettles or Giant Black Jellies have a bell (which is the round top part of the jellyfish) measuring 3ft in size, and have oral arms that, when extended, measure up to 20ft in length. Black Sea Nettles have a dark coloration which gave it the nickname “black jellyfish”. This jellyfish is rarely seen along the country coastline, the Giant Black Jelly has only been seen 5 times since 1926 the species appeared most recently, though, in large numbers in 1989 but has appeared at least twice previously in this century, it’s last visit was in 2005!

This jellyfish doesn’t like cold water it thrives in tropical waters, so it’s adapted to warm waters, which is why it’s rarely seen. Black Sea Nettles are carnivorous. They usually feed on zooplankton or other jellyfish. The Nettles harm to get their prey by using their stinging tentacles. After that the prey is transported to the gastrovascular cavity where it is digested.
