The green woodpecker is a common bird found in Europe. Its length is 30 - 36 cm long, and its wingspan is about 45 - 51 wide. This woodpecker is green with a bit of black and red on its head. They are usually found in open country and light woodlands. The easiest way to identify it is to find a green bird with black on its head and the noticeable sound they make. Green woodpeckers fit well in the ecosystem as they are not hunted. They are found in Europe and Wales all year long. They can be in woodlands, orchards, and parks. Basically they can be found where there are trees.

The population of the green woodpecker is around 670,000, and growing very rapidly. The population is rising at a 15% rate which is fast. These birds are not hunted, and are also farmed. Bad weather and global warming does affect the birds, and they can be badly affected by that. Green woodpeckers eats bugs. Catching bugs is easy for the woodpecker because they have sticky saliva. They flick their tongue out and the saliva will stick to the ant and it will bring it back in its mouth. It usually hunts for ants in trees, but if there is none, it will hunt for ant nest or nuts, berries, and seeds. Once it’s done eating it will wander away.

These birds compete with other birds and green woodpeckers. Green woodpeckers have no predators as of now. It has camouflage that keeps them from being seen by predators. The green woodpecker is in woodlands, so it is camouflaged well there. They also can fly off quietly or hide behind tree trunks when people or animals are near by.

Some interesting facts I learned on this bird was that it doesn’t have any predators as of now. It has camouflage so predators can’t see them. It also has a sticky tongue to eat bugs. I also learned that they are found in Europe’s woodlands, parks, and orchards. Another thing I learned is that they are always prepared if there isn’t any bugs, it will look for berries and nuts.
