The Okarito Kiwi is one of many Kiwi birds.  It is different from other birds because it is wingless.  It may be wingless because over time its DNA probably stopped making instructions for wings.  They are very interesting birds.

The Kiwi's general description is that it is brown and fluffy.  They are no bigger than a small dog like a Toy Poodle size.  They have skinny and narrow beaks.  They also have webbed feet like ducks.  They may have shared some ancesters over time.  They live in New Zealand and in the part that is damp and wet like a rain forest with logs and trees.

The Kiwi bird's Population or Conservation Status is seriously endangered.  They only live in the rainforests in New Zealand.  Their endangerment is considered " critically endangered " as some people would say.  They live happily off the Coast of New Zealand in their own colonies.

Kiwi's eat both meat and plants, but their diet mostly consists of invertebrates.  They eat things like crickets, spiders, caterpillars, and snails.  Their known predators are dogs, cats, and something called Mustileds which are ferrets, and weasels.  They also have some interesting facts.

The Kiwi has very interesting facts.  One is they are nocturnal like bats.  They also lay eggs almost the same size as themselves!!!  They are some very cute and cool animals.
